Cabot has an exciting opportunity for a Maintenance Mechanic with knowledge, skills, and experience to perform maintenance and repair as well as perform preventative maintenance.  The Maintenance Mechanic will work on-site at the Tuscola, IL plant.

How You Will Make an Impact

In this role, your primary duty will be to inspect, install, troubleshoot, adjust, and repair electro-mechanical equipment and facilities.  This role requires a safety mind-set, self-motivated person with a positive attitude, a ton of good energy, effective time management, organization, and record-keeping skills. A successful candidate will be someone who can:

  • Models Cabot values of integrity, respect, excellence, and responsibility.  Interacts professionally with site personnel, visitors, contractors, and individuals at all levels of the Cabot organization.  Follows work instructions, procedures, and policies.
  • Accepts overtime assignments as they occur as well as work different shift schedules as needed, responds to call-outs/backs.  Currently, maintenance works M-F 7am to 3pm.  To ensure the plant is operational, maintenance will need to accept call-outs after normal working hours.
  • Machine Maintenance:  Works from specifications and complex drawings, manuals, verbal/written instructions.  Assembles and disassembles equipment to isolate and diagnose; corrects equipment malfunctions by repairing or replacing defective parts.  Installs and un-installs processing equipment as needed.
  • Prepares, installs, repairs, and maintains pipe fittings, various types of pumps, and chain/belt driven conveyor systems.
  • Performs welding operations on a variety of structures and metal products.  Fits up and welds assemblies and sub-assemblies following proper safety guidelines. Plans welding procedures and sequences to ensure minimal distortion and maximize quality. May use various welding techniques such as heliarc, arc or gas welding and/or soldering to join metals. May perform related work such as flame cutting, bending, forming and template or fixture making. Reviews new and existing designs and develops procedures to ensure a superior product and facilitate assembly. Assists in the design of new assemblies and recommends revisions to existing designs.  Inspects incoming parts from commercial and specialty vendors to ensure superior product and facilitate assembly. Performs routine maintenance of welder equipment.
  • Plumbing:  Maintains and repairs plumbing fixtures, such as water tanks, heaters, pipes and joints.
  • Works in a safe manner.  Actively participates in Cabot's safety, health, and environmental programs.  Attends scheduled team meetings and completes safety training requirements. Keeps work area safe and clean. 
  • Uses a variety of hand and power tools, such as cut-off saws, drill presses and others.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and systems adhering to established schedules.
  • Uses computerized business management systems to enter maintenance work orders and document work performed.  Documents equipment condition to establish trends in operations or breakdowns. 
  • Uses analytical skills as well as root cause analysis to discover explanations for equipment failure.
  • Completes required paperwork and forms associated with maintenance activities and non-maintenance activities, i.e., SH&E incident reporting, production records, equipment testing results, etc.
  • Supports efforts to implement and maintain the Responsible Care® Management System and ISO Management Systems in line with the requirements of the RC14001® and ISO9001 technical specification, as applicable to the site/region.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You Will Bring to Cabot

  • High school diploma or equivalent.  Vocation/Technical School Associate degree in a related field or the military equivalency including ET A school would be a plus.  5+ years of experience in an industrial or chemical manufacturing environment.  Preferred electrical and instrumentation skills.
  • Ensures compliance with all work instructions, procedures, policies, standards, regulations, and industry best practices (OSHA, RC14001, ISO 9001, PSM).  Safely operate material handling equipment such as forklifts, aerial work platforms. Familiar with topics such as Process Safety Management (PSM), safe work permitting, lockout/tagout, emergency response, and hazard recognition. 
  • Willing and able to work collaboratively in a team-based environment. Strong written and verbal communication and active listening skills. Able to work independently as well. Self-motivated with a track record of dependability including work history.
  • Ability to remain calm and react effectively in critical situations.  Experience with accident and near miss reporting, incident investigation, and accountability to standards.
  • A strong mechanical aptitude.  Accurate and consistent in performing tasks. 
  • Good working knowledge of variety of machine tools, mechanical parts and their movements.
  • Knowledge of welding procedures, particularly involving high temperatures and specialty alloys; knowledge of equipment and related tools, including hand and power tools, measuring devices, welding positioners, overhead crane, plasma cutter and torches.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair procedures and methods; knowledge of equipment and related tools, including hand tools, drills, grinders, sawzall, concrete drills, cut-off saws, drill presses, etc. Knowledge of a variety of machine tools, mechanical parts, bearings, gears, and others. Familiarity with mechanical, electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic control systems.
  • Good hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and good touch perception.
  • Able to troubleshoot problems from major breakdowns to subtle adjustments to identify and eliminate root cause.
  • Ability to promptly diagnose and correct equipment malfunctions.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Able to use all types of measuring devices, calipers, micrometers, height gauges.
  • Able to work with drill press, mills, and vertical and horizontal band saws.
  • Able to read and interpret complex operating instructions.
  • Be able to read and understand technical manuals and blueprints, schematics, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulics.
  • Highly flexible and able to take on a wide variety of tasks to support team efforts.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Effective time management, organizational, and record keeping skills. Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook (e-mail program).
  • Flexible and able to work overtime and call out/backs, performing changing assignments and work schedules.
  • Physical requirements include but not limited to climbing stairs and ladders, standing, or sitting for extended periods, outdoor work, working at heights from scaffold, ladders, and/or grating, use of hand tools, and occasional heavy lifting.
  • Must be able to pass the pulmonary function test and wear the necessary respiratory equipment.
